FNS40207 Certificate IV in Financial Services (Bookkeeping)

A total 360 pathway

STOP PRESS: In addition to our training center at Mt Gravatt in South Brisbane, BIA Training now has a campus in North Brisbane - at 292 Anzac Avenue, Kippa Ring - if you wish to take the Certificate IV course in the classroom. Click here to view the timetable.

This nationally accredited qualification has been developed for Bookkeepers by Bookkeepers. The Bookkeeping Institute of Australia (BIA) has written the first ever training course for this qualification and was the first training institute in Australia to deliver the qualification in October 2007. It has already been has been proven in the field with over 700 students undertaking the BIA Certificate courses.

The Bookkeeping Institute of Australia is the only Registered Training Organisation in Australia providing a total 360 pathway for new bookkeepers to becoming BAS Agents under the new law - which will receive Royal Assent in January 2010.

Under the new regulatory regime for the registration of BAS agents, which will commence on 1 March 2010, bookkeepers must be registered in order to provide BAS agent services for a fee or to "engage in other conduct connected with providing such services."

However in order to register, a bookkeeper must hold a Certificate IV in Financial Services (Bookkeeping), or higher, and have undertaken at least 1,400 hours of relevant experience in the past 3 years.

The Bookkeeping Institute of Australia will not only enable you to obtain the nationally recognised Certificate IV in Financial Services (Bookkeeping) but through our partnership with tax agent ABN BAS you will also be able to provide BAS agent services for a fee while gaining your 1,400 hours for registration as a BAS Agent in your own right.

Don't be fooled by other uninformed training organisations into thinking that all you need is a Cert IV or that experience working as an employee will count against the 1,400 hours. The only experience that will count are BAS services performed under the "supervision and control of a tax agent registered under the Act or a BAS agent registered under the Act." ABN BAS qualify as such an agent and your experience will count.

The Bookkeeping Institute of Australia is also the only training provider to offer you the choice of taking our total 360 pathway Certificate IV in Financial Services (Bookkeeping) or our more comprehensive BI-580 Start Your Own Bookkeeping Business Program which is designed to help bookkeepers wanting to start their own BAS and Bookkeeping business.

Our total 360 pathway Certificate IV in Financial Services (Bookkeeping) course is for people who wish to have a career as an employed bookkeeper or as professional contract bookkeeper, either working as a BAS Agent or contracted to a BAS Agent.

GROUP ONE – WORKPLACE BASICS covers 2 of the industry core subjects, FNSICGEN304B - Apply health and safety practices in the workplace and FNSICGEN302B - Use technology in the workplace which are mandatory subjects for all Financial Services qualifications at any level.

The 7 units in GROUP TWO – ESTABLISH AND MAINTAIN A BOOKKEEPING SYSTEM are assessed as a single group cluster thus enabling us to teach all of the units in as a single subject. Consequently we do not have to duplicate any of our training or assessments thus dramatically reducing the teaching time in comparison with a TAFE college which teaches one unit at a time.

The 2 units in GROUP THREE — PART ONE – BOOKKEEPING POLICIES AND PRACTICES and the 2 units in GROUP THREE — PART TWO – MAINTAIN ASSET AND INVENTORY RECORDS & ACTIVITY STATEMENTS are also assessed as single group clusters.

In the past introductory accounting concepts and principles have been taught using a manual accounting system approach. The Bookkeeping Institute of Australia has adopted the view that it is more important for students to learn to operate a computer accounting system such as MYOB to perform these activities. Consequently in addition to 12 days of lectures, students will receive 4 days of extensive self-paced training in MYOB before starting on the assessments.

More Details

Our two day Introduction to Bookkeeping and Accounting course covers the principles and theory of accounting, including the Accounting Equation, Double Entry Bookkeeping, the Chart of Accounts, Assets, Liabilities, Owners Equity, Revenue and Expenses. There will be a series of lectures together with class exercises to reinforce the subjects covered. We have been running this unique course for over 5 years now and have received considerable praise from our students.

The accounting text book provided (all text books are included in the cost of the course) is specifically written for bookkeepers.

Our 4 day MYOB Accounting Plus, Payroll, GST & BAS course is a comprehensive MYOB course. It covers most of the aspects of MYOB Accounting Plus, including Payroll, GST & BAS, and combines the efforts of two different authors thereby ensuring students are exposed to a wide range of MYOB functions.

The two day Setting-up and Maintaining a Bookkeeping System and the two day Working in the Bookkeeping Industry & End-of-period Financial Reports courses bring together the theory and practice of bookkeeping in today's computer based world and prepares the student for the assessment tests - which are in themselves part of the learning experience.

The two day Bookkeeping Policies and Practices course brings together the application of principles of professional practice in the financial services industry (such as tax agents and professional accountants) with the development and implement of policies and practices relevant to bookkeeping activities.

The course finishes with the two day  Maintain Asset and Inventory records & Activity Statements and covers Preparation of financial reports and completing Business Activity (BAS) and Instalment Activity (IAS) Statement tasks using a scenario case study and Policy & Procedures Manual.

For the practical assessment tests we have created a scenario case study and have written a 38 page Policy & Procedures Manual which the student will be required to refer to for specific instructions on how that particular business operates. The purpose of this scenario and manual is, as far as possible, to simulate an actual workplace experience in the classroom.

Students will be required to first set up a company file, chart of accounts, opening balances, customers, suppliers, inventory items, tax codes and payroll records for this entity in a computerised accounting system and then to enter an entire month’s transactions comprising of creditors invoices and payments of suppliers, sales invoices, adjustment notes and banking, petty cash, credit card and direct debit transactions, reconciliations of bank accounts and subsidiary ledgers and payroll transactions. End of period reporting, bad debt and end of year processes will complete the assessment.

All of the processing of accounting transactions will be conducted using MYOB. Accounting principles and concepts including accounting entities, chart of accounts, the accounting equation & double entry bookkeeping will be covered and assessed. We will not be teaching manual accounting procedures as we believe that the introduction of GST and the requirement to report transactions on the Business Activity Statement (BAS) on a cash basis, as well as an accrual basis, have rendered manual accounting almost redundant and it is far more important that students have an extensive knowledge of computerised accounting systems, such as MYOB and QuickBooks.

As a consequence our students will be competent in MYOB as well as in basic bookkeeping and accounting principles.
